Why I Am Running

I’m a teacher, a dad and the son of working people. I grew up poor and I’ve worked the night shift, stood on factory floors and scraped by on fast food wages. I’ve been broke and counted out. But I’ve also been lifted up by teachers who never gave up on me, by second chances I didn’t always deserve and by a country that still believed in me. That faith taught me the most important lesson: no matter how heavy life gets, if we look out for one another none of us has to carry it alone.

I’m running because too many families are still waiting for that same chance. People are working harder than ever and still falling behind, while it's likely we are more divided now than we have been since the Civil War. We deserve better. We can put common sense ahead of chaos, compassion ahead of cruelty and hope ahead of despair. Together we can restore dignity to work, fairness to our economy and a future our kids can believe in. This fight isn’t just mine: it’s ours. And it's time we Revived the American Dream.

The Problem

In the Indiana 9th Congressional District, one out of every five residents relies on Medicaid/CHIPS for access to life-altering and life-saving medical care. Nearly 40% of those receiving benefits are under the age of 6. In addition, even for those that do not rely on Medicaid or CHIP, quality affordable healthcare is beyond the reach for many Americans.

The Facts

Scott Tittle, President of the Indiana Hospital Association, warns: “Nearly one-third of Indiana’s rural hospitals are operating at a loss… The ensuing ripple effect (from recent cuts to Medicaid) will likely bring about longer wait times, reduced access to care, staffing impacts, and in some instances, consolidation or closure of facilities.”

In most cases, generational poverty is not a result of people unwilling to work hard. It is caused by wages not keeping up with the basic needs of the working poor.

The Facts

Housing prices have risen nearly twice as fast as wages. Childcare costs more than college tuition in Indiana. Families spend thousands a year on prescriptions like insulin. Teachers are underfunded, and schools are stretched thin.

Common Sense Solution

Break the cycle of generational poverty by making the basics of life affordable: housing, healthcare, childcare, and education. Give families a foundation to build stability and wealth. Not through handouts, but a fair chance.

  • Expand affordable housing, protect renters, and support first-time homebuyers.
  • Paid family leave, affordable childcare, and tax credits that reward work.
  • Universal pre-K, fully funded PK-12 schools, and two years of free community college or trade school.
